Interview

"You're not your user."

  • I Interviewed 3 child care centre, 22 Parents,1 child care owner

  • The qualitative insight got from the parents, child care centre workers and the owners. 

  • The communication with parents was not appropriate is the primary reason for those problems.

  • Why parents choose childcare?

    • ​​Someone to take care of their kids while they are at work.

    • Kids get a friendly environment and help them to develop social skills

    • Help kids become school ready.

  • What are the pains faced?

    • ​​They were commonly worried what the kids do at child care as the communication between the child care and staff are is limited

    • Both parents and childcare had a standard issue informing about any emergency promptly 

    • The child care staff said parents don't pick up call most of the time

Survey

I  wanted some value to those qualitative data which I got from the interview and my team members also had the same opinion as me, so we as a team discussed and prepared the survey.

We got 101 responses

  • Survey helped us to confirm   parents primary concern was about that they were not satisfied with the communication between the childcare 

  • They don't get proper information about their kid's daily activities and improvement​

Empathy Mapping & Affinity Mapping

We put our data into empathy mapping and affinity mapping which helped us to understand the pattern from the data which we collected as a team. To know what is the real problem.

Pains

  • Lack of information about child's activities

  • Hygiene

  • Concerned about day to day routine of the child (e.g. nappy change, meals, education) 

  • location and vacancy

  • Survey also gave us few more insights such as parents concern was about location, staff to child ratios

Competitive Analysis

Few are the apps available in the market is picked for this, but we were surprised to know that even the existing app does not solve the issue parents were concerned about.

We identified the following key issues from the personas

  • Cost and care are the two most important services for parents of children in childcare centres.

  • Primary issues of transparency/info of child’s day-to-day activities and accessibility of communication between parents and childcare staff are common problems for both parents and childcare staff

Problem

​Parent’s main concerns were that they are uninformed about their child’s daily routine and developmental progress. Parents wanted frequent communication from their kid’s childcare staff throughout the day.

Solution

A platform where parents can check on any updates about the child, as they are posted or logged by childcare staff !

Moscow

Understanding what the  parents need we prioritized what features to be designed first in the app which will help the  child care centre to build more trust between the parents 

Design studio / Sketch

  • We sketched Our design within 20 mins time frame, and we had 10 mins to pitch our ideas. The Emergency notification and daily report with a voice memo was my pitch 

  • We did initial sketch by combining the idea.

Digital design

  •  We transformed the design to digital prototype using sketch

  • I was involved in designing the profile page, the notification, daily report and chat

Interactive Prototype

  • With more valuable feedback we provide the final design

  • Julie, a mother of two kids, was at work, and she hears the alert notification sound from her phone overriding the silent mode.

  • She chats with the child care and resolve the issue​

  • She checks the timeline of her daughter and get to know what she ate and what she is doing during the day

  • At end of the day Julie is pleased to look at videos and hearing the voice memo of her daughter in her daily report.

Summary

  • We refined the prototype after feedback from usability testing.

  • This MVP site is a mobile-first solution designed to improve the communication between childcare centre and parents. 

  • The product provides features that ensure parents, their kids are safe and happy in the childcare. 

Knowledge gained

  • Talk to the users casually rather than interviewing them to get more insight

  • Team collaboration

Challenges faced

  • Approaching Childcare centres and organize timing for interview and usability testing was not easy. As staff were very busy with their schedule

  • Project timeframe was short nevertheless we were able to deliver the most required features.

What Next

  • Design an admin app for childcare which allows them to better manage their work

  • Would like to design a timeline with live video update so that parents can feel the kids presence with them

  • Push notifications regarding the upcoming events.

  • More user research and satisfy more business cases.

  • Moreover, much more to come in future, stay tuned.

MY WORK

Provide ED staff with a convenient and reliable way to record the ED patients pain level at regular intervals with reminders and store the information for medical staff to review and access.

Design a website for a driving school to help students to check availability and book classes from the site

A platform where parents can check on any updates about the child, as they are posted /logged by childcare staff !

Redesigned the website and addressed the requirements of users to revive and minimize the customer churn rate.
